Wire fraud: how to protect your closing
Criminals impersonate title companies, agents and lenders and send fake wire instructions. A two-minute phone call can stop it.

← All guides01How the scam works
Fraudsters break into an email account or copy a real one and send “updated” wire instructions shortly before closing. The message looks like it comes from your agent, lender or title company. If you send the money to that account, it can be gone within hours.
02How to protect yourself
- Never trust wire instructions that arrive by email alone. Always confirm by phone using a number you already know, such as one from our website or your original paperwork.
- Be suspicious of any last-minute change to account numbers, banks or deadlines.
- Do not click links or open attachments from unexpected emails.
- Never email bank details, Social Security numbers or other sensitive information. Use a secure method we confirm with you.
- Before you wire, call us to verify the amount, the account and the routing number.
- Use a strong, unique password and two-step verification on your email.
03What Lumen Title will never do
We will not change wire instructions by email without a phone call to a number you already have. If something looks different, stop and call us first at (813) 331-5212.
04If you think you were targeted
- Call your bank immediately and ask for a wire recall.
- Call us right away so we can alert the other parties.
- File a report with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov and with local law enforcement.
Speed matters: recovery is more likely when the bank is contacted within hours.
